Kurt Hoffmann′s satire concerning Germany′s development during the first half of the 20th century tells the story of two schoolmates - Hans and Bruno. They could not be more different. While Hans is ambitious and must always work hard for his career, it seems that the happy go lucky Bruno is carefree.

Andreas, a young German student comes to Hungary on an exchange programme. In the Hungarian village he falls in love with the stationmaster's daughter Piroschka and spends much of his time with her. A plaster of paris mask of the girl's face is made for the doctors to keep as a remembrance of Luscha. But as soon as the mold is removed from her face, she suddenly seems to become an entirely different woman.

Norbert Lang inherits a hotel and has to deal with a multitude of problems at the end of the year. There's the pushy singer who wants to get closer to him than he'd like. The staff quickly takes off after arguments. When the heating starts acting up, he has to hire a repairman. But the repairman shows up with unexpected backup and causes even more chaos.

The miniseries depicts the fate of the residents of an apartment block in Prague’s Jewish quarter following the invasion by German troops in 1939. The caretaker Glaser, who is of German descent, also comes under pressure when his son is arrested in a communist pub. To save his own skin, he informs on two young people who are active in the resistance.
