This film tells the story of two girls, Karina and Roesdjana, who have conflicting characters and habits. While Karina is traditional, Roesdjana is modern.

A wealthy man marries twice. His jealous second wife murders the first and gets away with it and then plots, along with her daughter, to do away with the stepdaughter.

A medical student, Kusmayadi, the son of Dr. Sugiharto, is going for a vacation in Bandung with Selikur and Winarto. There he meets up with Asmarani, and later on, both vow to be together forever. Dr. Sugiharto opposes their relationship, since he has arranged Kusmayadi's marriage with Lasminah, the daughter of a trader. The relation of Kusmayadi-Asmarani is successfully broken. Asmarani falls ill and dies. When Kusmayadi know the news, he falls ill and dies too.

Anang, Saman and Ahmad are three best friends from a village in Subang. Anang and Ahmad fall in love with Saman's sister, Hasanah. When the call for enrollment in Heiho (army troops formed by Japanese) is announced, Anang and Saman register themselves but Ahmad does not. Anang is accepted as a soldier. When the village people welcome the Heiho, Ahmad commits theft. Hasanah's heart leans more and more towards Anang, and she yearns for his return.

Hardjono gives a handkerchief to his girlfriend, Karnasih, as a token of love. During their holiday together, Karnasih experiences an accident and becomes blind. Hardjono then goes abroad to study eye medicine. Upon his return, he conducts a surgery on his girlfriend's eyes and succeeds.

A Sumarna, the deputy head of an office in Jakarta, is suspicious of Karta and several other employees because they live very luxuriously. He asks his boss, Subroto, to investigate and take action against them. Subroto, who feels that he is committing fraud with Karta et al, negotiates to overthrow Sumarna by using Nani, a widow of a dragger. Nani succeeds in taking Surmarna away from his wife, Hayati, and makes Sumarna also commit corruption. Sumarna is arrested and sentenced to five years. Hayati, who is divorced, lives in the village with her child in her parents' house. Because this provides a good education for her child, she returns to Jakarta. She meets Amat, Sumarna's driver, who then invites her to the house of Dul ​​and Mirah, a vegetable seller. Hayati sells rujak. After five years, Sumarna is released from prison, while Subroto et al are sent to prison because their corruption is exposed. When walking in front of Dul's house, Amat recognizes him.
