The protagonists of the film meet at the Republican Agricultural Exhibition of Advanced Practices in Kyiv. Among them is Pavel Zarechny, a talented plant breeder, passionately devoted to his work, and Timofey Khizhnyak, the director of a scientific testing station, for whom personal gain is the ultimate goal in life. Also present are Dasha, Zarechny’s lab assistant, who becomes his love, and Dyachenko, a fellow scientist whose envy of Pavel’s success leads him to forget about decency and honor...

Ukraine, 1920s. A gang of enemies of the Soviet government is rampaging in the village. Returning home, wounded 15-year-old Red Army soldier Fedya Panko decides to neutralize the enemy, who, as it turns out, operates not only on the battlefield.

On the way to Partisans camp Sgt. Tsybulya suddenly lands in the middle of German troops. Now he must find a way to return to the Red Army.

A young man from the city falls in love with a girl from the country side. She is not accepted by the village community: people think she is a witch.
