Maurice Ferlet

In 1954, Daniel Vérin, a young schoolteacher of Algerian descent, made a radical decision: he turned his back on colonial France and joined the Algerian insurgents. He enlisted in the FLN, then the ALN, and became "Ali," a soldier in the struggle for independence. At the end of the war in 1962, he became an Algerian citizen. But the long-awaited independence did not bring Ali the taste of victory. On a scholarship, he went to study in the United States. Upon his return, the Algerian administration forbade him from entering his homeland. Rejected by the country he had defended, he obtained American citizenship in 1969. Condemned by France for his activism and ignored by Algeria for more than forty years, Ali was not officially recognized as a mujahid, a fighter of the Revolution, until 2004.

FC Metz represents a 35-year run in Ligue 1, winning two Coupe de France titles and one Coupe de la Ligue. The club is inextricably linked to the history of Lorraine: the first players came from mining families and were deeply committed to representing their region, a sentiment only strengthened by the annexation of Moselle by Germany between 1940 and 1945. Then, in 1984, the Coupe de France victory against Monaco brought to the forefront the battles to save Lorraine's steel industry, a battle that ultimately proved futile. Finally, in 1998, the club made a lasting impression by finishing second in the French Championship. Through the accounts of former players and key coaches, we discover the history of FC Metz, its unforgettable moments, its highs and lows. The archive images take us back to the times of Patrick Battiston, the goalkeeper André Rey, the duo Nico Braun - Hugo Curioni, Jules Bocandé and Jean-Paul Bernad, the "PP gunslingers" Robert Pirès and Cyrille Pouget.

Over the past thirty years, the French textile industry has outsourced almost all of its production. Thousands of jobs have been lost, particularly in the Hauts-de-France region. Those laid off have never found new employment in the garment sector. Today, for some fashion designers, "Made in France" is a matter of quality and reputation, and we are witnessing the beginnings of "relocation" for certain product lines. Capitalizing on this trend, a sewing workshop opened in Ham, Picardy, in May 2017. The plan is to employ 30 people by 2020. Supported by local authorities, this initiative is spearheaded by Jean-Luc François, a couturier committed to training in fashion-related professions. For a year, from the initial application review to the delivery of the first orders, Maurice Ferlet shares with us the hopes and doubts of the first twelve people to join this workshop.
