Praised for its fine photography and production design if not its narrative, Sergei Bondarchuk directed this adaptation of the tale by Alexander Pushkin. Boris Godunov came to the Czarist throne at the end of the 16th century, after the original heir to Ivan the Terrible had died. At first, things went well for Godunov (played by Bondarchuk), but when the Russian people began to believe he had killed Ivan the Terrible's son in order to gain the throne, an alliance sprang up against the new Czar. Events continued to spin out of control as a young monk was presented as the son Godunov had supposedly killed. Now he was openly accused of failing an assassination attempt, which seems to be even worse than succeeding. In addition to these woes, Boris Godunov began to suffer serious health problems. So much for the joys of kingship.

The film is based on the true story of Captain Marinesku and set in 1944 during WWII at the Russian Navy Base. Young and beautiful Tanka is in love with Aleksandr Marinin, the brave Captain of the Russian submarine. He is under the KGB surveillance, and his life is at risk. He takes his boat to fight the Nazi fleet, and he cannot come back home without a victory.

These are the dark times around 1720 in Russia. Tsar Peter the Great dies and his highly esteemed partner and friend Prince Menshikov rules the country from now on. But there are also those who oppose the prince. Messenger Ivan, an army officer, fails one of the risky resistance orders given to him by the scheming opposition and openly confesses to it. He is to be punished mercilessly, but the head of the secret service recognizes the officer's qualities, and from now on Ivan becomes an agent of the Tsar. Thus begins a series of mysterious incidents and he begins to investigate them. Masons, pirates and grand dukes, all have their dark secrets...
