At the beginning of the century, in Italy, a wealthy woman Francesca (Loren), adopts a poor little girl named Nunziata. The years pass, Nunziata falls in love Federico (Bova), her adoptive brother, son of Francesca.

Actor turned director Luigi Lo Cascio stars as the talented architect and fervent environmentalist Michele who has moved from Palermo to his ideal city, Siena. He holds a successful job and is living out a dream experiment of functioning one year without running water or electricity. Not surprisingly, he also displays a passionate opposition to cars and driving. One evening, after being forced to borrow his boss’ car in order to collect a colleague for a work function, Michele’s life takes an unexpected turn. In the blinding rain Michele hits something he cannot identify. After leaving a note on a parked car he believes he damaged, he continues down the road only to come across a dead body a few miles down which he later discovers belongs to one of Siena’s most important luminaries. Michele immediately calls the police, but in doing so, he unwittingly brings intense suspicion on himself as his uncertainty raises more questions than he has answers for.

After a long marriage, Maria and Jeffrey are now in crisis. The young Carabiniere Gatta is sent to barracks in the Naples area. It's 1946 and the war is still hanging in the air even if the small community doesn't seem to have been affected that much by it. Even so, certain suspicions take root in the brigadier's mind. The hotel in the town was the setting for unexplained deaths and crimes that had been covered up. Gatta decides to investigate. Fragments begin to emerge, killers and their victims take shape and speak to each other from different times. There's the hotel owner, a grief-striken mother, a weak son and long-suffering sister, an orphan and two woman who were violently killed. Pain, indifference and shame cast a shadow over everything.

Over a long weekend, a group of friends gathers together, a diverse representation of the last twenty-five years of the Italian left. Some of them haven't seen each other in a long time; the occasion is the release from prison of a former friend and comrade, accused of killing a judge in the 1980s. Roberto Ferro is on parole and wants to know which of his former comrades reported him. Among the friends, some have achieved privileged positions; others, like Nanni and Malena, have adapted to a more modest life and have retained, at least in part, the ideals of their youth. Malena, an Argentine exile who experienced torture at the hands of the military, had a love affair with Roberto and, before that, a strong bond with a disappeared comrade. Roberto's return reignites personal and political conflicts within the group.
