The film traces the path of the hero (formerly an ensign and a Knight of St. George, and then a talented commander of the Red Army) from the Civil War to the Great Patriotic War.

The movie is set on one of the northern construction sites. Two armed bandits seize a shuttle bus. Among the hostages is the director of the construction site - a courageous and brave man. He manages to organize a fight back against the bandits and save people.

The wife of test pilot Anton Blysh dies in an accident. In his absence, the doctor - the wife of his friend and understudy Vinogradov - convinces his superiors that Blysh should be removed from the upcoming tests of a new model airplane. However, having returned to work, Anton himself gives the right of supremacy to his friend, an excellent pilot, who has had no luck so far.

The plot revolves around the residents of a communal apartment in Moscow, particularly the Yakushev and Banykin families. Their wonderful relationships could make even the closest of relatives envious. Over the course of many days, the audience witnesses the complex fates of various people.
