A bright and idealistic young graduate steels himself for a dog-eat-dog world, only to flounder in a job market packed with thousands of other hopefuls. When he eventually decides to start his own business as a middle-man, he discovers that the world of business does not live up to his lofty ideals.

Ambitious businessman Shyamalendu enjoys showing his visiting sister-in-law, Tutul, the extravagant life he leads with his wife. But Tutul is less than impressed with the trappings of wealth.

A scientist accidentally finds a drug that can reveal an individual's past. However, when a few politicians fear their exposure, they plot to kill him.

The story revolves around a hotel named "Shah Jahan Regency" and lives of people associated with that hotel. The hotel is one of a kind and very different from others as it strongly believes in the rich culture of India and tries to imply and maintain that in every aspect of the hotel - starting from the decor, to uniforms of the staff members, to the names given to various parts of the hotel.

Dinesh and Maneesha fall in love and, soon after, get married. However, things get complicated for the newly-wed couple as Poonam, Dinesh's colleague files an attempted rape case against him.

Sata Bose, the receptionist of hotel Shahjahan and other crew members work hard to make the hotel first choice of the upper class for socializing in the city, just got the taste of freedom from British rule. The movie revolves around different characters - hotel employees to page 3 personalities dealing different human emotions. Although Sata Bose (played by Uttam Kumar) is the central character of the film, he is not the protagonist in many ways, rather the movie can be described as "hyperlink movie" made long ago than the term is coined.
