21st Century Girl is an omnibus feature that is of the girls, by the girls and for the girls. The work of 15 women directors under the age of 30, each of whom contributed an 8-minute film, the package highlights a range of genres, visions and thematic concerns.

NO CALL NO LIFE

Adapted from Kabei Yukako's novel of the same name. After being guided by a mysterious message from the past on a cellphone's answering machine, Umi encounters Mahiro, a delinquent at her school. They gradually come closer, but more messages appearing on the answering machine will unveil past secrets...

Tokeru

Mako is worried about her future, afraid to be stuck all alone with a baby in the countryside, just like all the young people of her age. While her friends stay busy by having sex, she has her own way to keep her mind off boredom.

Leave in Summer

Nana runs an inn called Nakajima-so in a seaside town. One day, a young man named Fujii Shuntaro comes to visit and reveals that his girlfriend stayed at the inn one year prior, just before she died. Following in the footsteps of his lover, Nana takes on the role of guide and joins Shuntaro as he wanders the town.

The Day I Realized I'm in Love

Nagisa, a sophomore in college, doesn't have a lover.

A Crimson Star

When fourteen-year-old Yo is hospitalized she gradually develops feelings for Yayoi who is a nurse tending her. However, Yayoi leaves the nursing profession in favour of prostitution. Yo is disappointed, but turns to the older woman after she is the subject of unrequited love from her mother's man. The two grow closer and Yo is about to find out what motivates Yayoi.

Love Doesn't Matter to Me

Hiiro Miyata is 19 and works hard to be able to afford both her college and paying rent to her financially irresponsible mother. Physical intimacy makes her sick, and her only vice is huffing air fresheners when she's anxious. While working in a convenience store, she ends up befriending Miyabi Enaga, an aloof girl shunned because his father once killed a person. Based on a novel by Ayano Takeda, the author of Sound! Euphonium.
