A man carries his wife down into the freezer in the basement. It is the painter Alex, who has killed his wife Christina. Helen is on the run from her impending silver wedding anniversary. She collapses onto the sofa at Alex's house, on his peaceful little farm, far away from people. Here, all you can hear is the faint thumping of a fishing boat on the fjord and the sound of a freezer starting and stopping at regular intervals.

The film opens in a small theatre, where the management of the company Clinox A/S watches their latest advertising push for the red condom Ding Dong . Everyone is excited and expect that here has been really could become a big bestseller . But the day after optimism disappears , Consumer Council prohibits the new condom . It is election year and the government is afraid the color offensive . Meanwhile, a mysterious woman named Lucy Ferner goes towards Oslo . She represents a Hong Kong group that is looking for a place where they can develop their energy consuming cosmetics industries.

The movie begins with a disenchanted poet who, having had his fill of the world, decides to hide out in a large department store. There are many floors, dusty nooks and crannies, and forgotten storerooms where he can secret himself. He believes he has found the peace and serenity he seeks--away from humankind--in order to write his poetry. To his initial horror, he finds he is not alone. There are Others who have also sought refuge in the dark places of the department store. He quickly finds himself at the mercy of this clandestine social underclass, for none may leave and risk exposing those who have spent years in the store. What quickly evolves is a chilling tale involving the poet and a young woman who had lost her way in the store while a mere child, and who has since spent her entire life as the downtrodden handmaid to the evil matriarch who rules her clan with an iron fist.

This black-and-white Norwegian film is a great rarity: a film with comic elements set in a mental ward which does not overstep the bounds of common sense or good taste.
