The art of theater is a complex craft. In 19 minutes, you can’t convey everything that is taught over five years. Our film is only a short walk through the Lunacharsky State Institute of Theatre Arts, a cinematic panorama of three directing classes. The classes of M. O. Knebel, A. A. Goncharov, and A. V. Efros.

These songs are born on long hikes, around campfires in moments of joy and sadness. Here, in the Leningrad club "Vostok", they take the stage for the first time. And is it possible to remain indifferent when the argument turns to the song?

On April 8, 1894, a young princess from the Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, to the great joy of the heir to the Russian throne, Nicholas, finally agrees to convert to Orthodoxy and become his wife. And it is not surprising — she is a great person by Soviet standards: a laureate of the State Prize, twice Hero of Socialist Labor, "innovator of collective farm production." Traditionally, such people were filmed exclusively in production and in the stands, with a cheerful announcer commenting on their outstanding achievements. Obukhovich showed it quite differently. And not "at the machine", but in a completely different environment.

Teachers and students are in different parts of the country. The First of September is celebrated by first—graders in Ulyanovsk, history and literature lessons in an Azerbaijani village, music in the Lithuanian city of Siauliai, biology in Leningrad.
