Kjeld Abell

Early morning. A young couple enters their apartment after locking themselves out. The home is completely empty and dark, and there is no sign of the family who had been their neighbors for years. The lights don't work, and when they finally manage to light a match, they see the body of the old girl slumped in an armchair.

Mrs. Adda Ernst is a middle-aged lady of the bourgeoisie. She has a nice husband Mr. Ernst, a lovely home and two healthy children Birgit and Hans, who like most of their peers are interested in swing. Mrs. Adda is musical herself, and has a beautiful singing voice, sometimes she can fall into melancholy over the career she never had. But she is naturally endowed with a rare good mood, she soon sheds her sad mood. In reality, she has only one worry. She is afraid of getting old, and therefore makes some convulsive efforts to still seem young. She refuses to realize that her daughter has grown up.

It's a warm summer evening in North Zealand. Black clouds are rising over the horizon and threatening thunder. Margit is cycling from the small guesthouse where she has settled down for her summer vacation to a party at a friend's house, which lives a few kilometers away. Margit is wearing a black dress and looks quite stunning, coming there on a bicycle - but it's necessary, because the landlady has decreed that all her guests must wear black - "it looks so good on her white terrace".

Anna Louise is tired of her life as a housewife in the country. So she seizes the opportunity when the vagabond Nick randomly rings the doorbell. She invites him in, and together they do all the work in the summer villa after the maid is sent on vacation. Anna Louise starts raising Nick, but soon the roles are reversed, so that Nick is raising Anna Louise. Then Anna Louise's husband arrives and he has difficulty handling the situation. Anna Louise and Nick leave the summer house together, with Anna Louise staying in the house maid's room without her husband's knowledge.

Danish version of Kjeld Abell's successful musical comedy from 1935. Clerk Larsen loses the melody of his youth, which he had when he met his wife. His happiness and dreams have disappeared in a bourgeois existence. "It was supposed to be so good, and then it was actually bad," as one of the play's popular songs - 'The Song of Larsen' - goes. But then the quest to find the melody again begins.
