A young doctor has been assigned to a hospital in the provinces, in the lakes district of northern Poland. The area is a playground with hunting lodges for the priviledged, the local politicians cover up any leaks to the public. The doctor discovers a case of drunken driving but is silenced by blackmail in the court. He tries to fight back but has a love affair with the unfaithful wife of the town's Mayor.

The story is of an engineer in conflict with his superior. He won't go along with the ususal corruption and conformity. He is left to himself amid indifference and ineptitude by his fellow workers and the management.

Soon after the end of the war, a former officer moves to a small seaside town in the Recovered Lands. The situation in this post-German territory is still unsettled.

The plot of the episodes shows: events of social and historical importance on the symbolic example of a highlander family - the Gąsienica family; and "human" matters - the great ones, such as love, death, murder, and the ordinary, everyday ones, such as work, struggle for existence, entertainment and fun.
