Sankichi Matsutani, a poor young fisherman, falls in love with Kikue, the only daughter of fisher Shiimbei. As the star-crossed lovers come from different religious backgrounds, they soon meet fierce opposition from their communities.

After driving back the Kanto-based Tojin Alliance, the Osaka hangure group Battle Family, led by Kenji Tsukino (Ryohei Abe), stands victorious. Yet the powerful Kanto Sanrenwakai, which controls the Tojin Alliance, continues to seek revenge as part of its planned expansion into Kansai. One night, Battle Family members are drinking at their usual hangout—a bar owned by Yuya (Kaname Endo)—when Kenji is confronted by an old acquaintance, gangster Fujiyoshi (Honkon). Tensions flare, and Kenji and Yuya end up beating Fujiyoshi to death. Unbeknownst to them, Fujiyoshi was a sworn brother of Hanashiro (Hitoshi Ozawa), the wakagashira of the Fujimasa-gumi, where Kugisaki belongs. To settle the score, Kugisaki summons Kenji and orders him to kill Yuya. At the same time, the Tojin Alliance begins moving into Kansai, hunting down the Battle Family. With enemies closing in from all sides, a new and deadly conflict begins.

Ren Hoshizaki (Takahiro Kuroishi), a lone drifter, is hired by Katsuya Dojima (Daisuke Motoki), boss of the Dojima-gumi, to brutally assault Kuroda of the Tojin Alliance. Forced to lie low in Osaka, Ren takes refuge with the Fujimasa-gumi. Through Kugisaki (Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi), he is introduced to the “Battle Family,” led by Kenji Tsukino (Ryohei Abe). However, Ren openly declares that he refuses to work under anyone weaker than himself and challenges Kenji to a fight. Despite his undefeated record, Ren is defeated instantly by the larger Kenji. From that day on, Ren begins working under the Battle Family—but his path is far from simple…

Produced by Hitoshi Matsumoto, Documental pits ten comedians against each other. The objective is to make each other laugh in a closed room. Each contestant brings a one million yen participation fee. The last person to stay in the room without laughing wins. The winner is awarded a 10 million yen prize and bragging rights as the funniest comedian.

After participating to a previous show where they have to bet or be challenged to any kind of competitions, the losing members of the Gaki no Tsukai are selected to spend 24 hours in a setting which they have no knowledge of the theme nor the course of the events. They are exposed to various absurd and crazy situations nonstop for 24 hours and must refrain from laughing. If they do so, hang-men appear and hit the rule breakers with a weapon (the weapon varies every year).
