Ruth Butler, a clerk in an emporium, marries Jimmy Rutledge and thereby greatly displeases his mother, the owner of the emporium, because of Ruth's lowly origins. The agency is based in the Absinthe House, a French Quarter nightclub on Bourbon Street.
