The film starts at the countryside, where station master Viirimäki is spending his summer holiday. He has gotten into the holiday mood to the extent that he wakes up from his stupor at the very moment he should already be getting back to work. Unfortunately the last ship from the island where he has been vacationing has already sailed, but as luck would have it, local residents Himanen and Kehkonen promise to help him out. Things turn out differently, however, and the attempt to help starts out an adventure filled with misunderstandings and plot twists.

Immersed in his research work, professor Reinhold Varavaara realizes that he has neglected his children's upbringing. He falls in love with his son Pelle's girlfriend Marja and becomes a laughing stock in the eyes of his family. The offended father sets out to discipline his ill-behaved children.

Posing as a woman, Himanen gets to know the police chief's daughter Alli, but as a result of coincidences and misunderstandings, the two men end up in jail, each suspected in turn of being a fugitive Vikström.

Soldiers conducting combat exercises in the area attract women more than civilians, as Raakki-Kustaa and cantor Sylvester learn to their cost. Private Malakias charms the cowgirl Sandra with his smooth talk. Major Jyrki's manly appearance appeals to the charming lady of the manor, Oilia.

Ilona, who is dating actor Aarne, wants to pursue a career in theater herself. Sakari, a professor of surgery, strongly opposes his daughter's plans, but changes his mind after falling in love with actress Irma.
