Commander Emanuel is a man who dedicates his life to fighting pornography. Going through financial difficulties, he finds himself obliged to rent his house to a college of girls. Over time he will find out that college is actually a house of meetings.

In the tiny poor town of Asa Branca, in the middle of Brazilian Northeast, Roque Santeiro is worshiped as a saint. He was supposedly killed by a bandit, 18 years ago, trying to save the local church. After his disappearance, local leaderships such as landowner Sinhozinho Malta and mayor Florindo, took profit on that to control the humble population. They even make up a widow, Porcina, who should have married Roque secretly before his death. What they don't expect is that Roque is alive, and he's back to, allegedly, "save his people". Now Malta, Florindo, Porcina, and others must hold him down and explain the "truth" to their commoners, in a desperate attempt to save their own bottoms. Meanwhile, mysterious facts surround Asa Branca, such as a Werewolf, a film crew who are trying to shoot a movie about Roque's story, and violent murderers.

The famous psychologist Teca falls in love with the widower Renato, father of one of her patients. The romance awakens the jealousy of Stela, who harbors an unhealthy passion for Renato, her brother-in-law.

Antônio is on his deathbed after helping a Black man escape his own father's plantation. Before dying, Antônio asks his father, Judge Queiroz Antunes, to raise the young enslaved boy, Bento, as his own son.

Marked by tragedy, Feliciano Júnior returns to Tubiacanga as Raimundo Flamel, driven by the desire to avenge the death of his parents.

The central theme of the soap opera is the struggle for political control in the interior of Bahia between the two most powerful *coronéis* (landowning bosses) of the cocoa region: Sinhô Badaró and Horácio da Silveira. Virgílio, an ambitious lawyer, is summoned to the town by Colonel Horácio but ends up becoming involved with Ester, the colonel's wife. Captain João Magalhães is a card sharp who poses as a military engineer, successfully deceiving the entire town. He falls in love with Sinhô Badaró's daughter, Donana. By the end of the story, he reveals that he had only gotten close to the Badarós out of opportunism. After numerous clashes with Sinhô Badaró, Colonel Horácio secures political power in the town of Ferradas, with the acknowledgment of the local population.
