Despite his difficult circumstances, he finds love in the form of Sachiko and the two marry. They later travel to Nanjing to live a new life together where Sachiko and Shaochang cooperate with the Japanese-backed government. Watanabe Kazuma and Kawai Matagorō from the Bizen Okayama Ikeda clan were close friends, but they inevitably became enemies after Matagorō killed Kazuma's younger brother, Gentayū, and fled. Matagorō, in Edo, came to regret his birth as a samurai. He met and fell in love with Okō, a bathhouse maid. As the discord between the Hatamoto and the Ikeda clan deepened, Tadao died of illness. Seizing the opportunity to ease the conflict, the shogunate ordered the Ikeda clan to be succeeded by the young lord Katsugorō and to relocate to the Ikeda clan of Inshū Tottori. Meanwhile, Matagorō was exiled from Edo.

Matsugoro is a poor rickshaw driver whose animated spirit and optimistic demeanor make him a favorite of the town. Matsu helps an injured boy, Toshio, and is hired by the boy's parents.

Bank robbers hide their loot in an underwater cave in a small fishing village, but the Ama (female divers) of the village suspect something and dive to find it.

In a certain port town, there is a group of young men called the Wakakusa-kai. The chairman Oda (Miki), member Ichiro Sonoda (Ishihama), his sister and music lover Keiko (Misora), Keiko's classmate Sachiko (Ota Chieko) and her brother Shoji (Yamada) meet enthusiastically to brighten the town and help themselves grow. Ichiro's family lives with his father and Keiko in a milk shop, but Keiko's desire to go to music school is unlikely to be fulfilled. Meanwhile, Shoji's father is trying to get Shoji and Keiko married.
