Diane and Dora are two prostitutes who begin to rebel against their lot in life. Meanwhile, in another part of town, a murderer is at large.

At the end of WWII the Dutch resistance kills a German officer in front of the house of a Dutch family. Years after the war the young boy who witnessed the killing runs into the members of the resistance who committed the killing.

With the book The Waves by Virginia Woolf as point of departure, the film follows six characters trying to recapture the feeling of harmony they knew as children. They meet each other in a restaurant at a farewell dinner for Percival, who is leaving for India. When he dies through an accident in India, the group falls apart.

The film is set in a signalman's house during the German occupation. When it turns out that the mother has committed adultery with a German, things start to go downhill for the father. Germans take over his land, and his children fend for themselves.

The story of a young woman with mental problems told in a non-chronological fashion.
