On the edge of a Moldovan village lives a wise old and infinitely lonely Aunt Ruta. She is always eager to help her fellow villagers, to cheer them up, to give them useful advice. It was not easy for her to forgive a long-standing offense, but she finds the strength to forget it and visits her dying relative to ease the last hours of his life.

Four love stories connected by newsreels of the late 60s. Each short story begins with an epigraph taken from the Song of Songs of the Old Testament. The stories are interconnected by documentary shots and numerous interviews taken on the streets from passers-by who are asked the same question: “what does it mean to love?”.

An older couple have four children who left them long ago. Tired of waiting for letters which never arrive, the father takes a trip to see how the children are doing.

The teacher of the village school Horia, trying to instill in students a love for their land, tells them the legends associated with the ancient belfry. This displeases the headmaster, who did not understand the real motives of the teacher's behavior. The belfry burns down during the fire, leaves the village of Horia. But all that is good and useful that I did Horia is not lost. Remain his students.
