Lam Tung is an old man living a solitary life in his Hong Kong apartment. Since his children have grown up and moved away, he decides to let a room to an ambitious, young film student Cheng Yang. Both years apart in age and ideals, Piled Cloud provides a fresh look at the generation gap between two very different individuals.

It was raining non-stop when Hong Kong was rocked by the tumultuous events of October 2014 (the "umbrella movement"). In a fixed sequence shot, the film captured students meeting each other in the hall, in the rooms, discussing, arguing about or remaining indifferent to the event, while it continued to rain outside.

In order to fulfill the expectation of her mom and her grandpa, Nam is raised as a boy since she was born. She dresses like a boy every day before going to school, gets changed back to a girl’s uniform, and puts on a boy’s outfit before heading home. Her hysterical mom anticipates the return of her husband, which is a dream never come true. Nam finds her only shelter at her childhood friend Yeung’s house, a place where she can finally be herself, i.e. doing laundry for her underwear. But her life changes on the day when Yeung disappears.

There are two kinds of loneliness: The sense of isolation in society which people experience from time to time, and the loneliness in searching for the meaning of life. A young man and an old man suffer the same pangs of emotions not uncommon in the city. They live across the corridor as neighbours but remain strangers, facing the absurdity of life with no means to escape. The film was shot in the ruin of Cheung Chau Cinema, locating in Cheung Chau, an island in Hong Kong. Before saying goodbye, he organises his own screening of The One-Armed Swordsman (1967) directed by Chang Cheh.

Marked with whimsical adventures, their journey imparts unexpected lessons about the secrets of the adult world.
