Even though he has become successful with many fans, Rhoma remains modest, is still religious and listens to his parents. But Ida, a fan of his, has been sending more than 100 letters to him. Rhoma sympathises with her and falls in love. Meanwhile, Ida’s mother is a poor widow who sells gado-gado (traditional Indonesian salad). Rhoma’s mother wants him to marry another girl, Mira, who has a higher social standing. Rhoma rejects his mother’s choice and both mother and Mira, mock Ida and even tries to consult a shaman. Rhoma does not like Mira’s "modern" attitude. When Mira has an accident and Ida helps her, her attitude changes, and Ida and Rhoma end up marrying each other.

To avoid an arranged marriage chosen by her parents, Lia decides to run away with the man she loves, even though Rully is an unemployed man who is merely taking advantage of her parents' wealth. There is a street food stall in a village where unemployed men hang around, singing and gambling. Ani’s parents and Heri’s father, a judge, are angered by the gambling. But Rhoma, son of a poor widow, often sings his self-composed songs there, as he is still unemployed. A friend suggests that he should go to a recording company. He succeeds and his songs are hits. Then Heri falls in love with Ani, Rhoma’s girlfriend. So he conspires with the friends that he often gambles with at the eatery, and when Rhoma tries to help a hostess who has been killed, he is instead accused as the murderer and jailed. In the end, the true murderer is discovered, and Rhoma and Ani can be together again.

A little boy is told the tale about the development of Jakarta, when a village was divided into two, and causing the people to oppose each other. On one side, there is Anton while the other side is lead by Mahmud. Maulana, the village boy whom Anton has adopted, falls in love with Laila, the sister of Mahmud. This love affair irritates Majid, Mahmud’s right-hand man, because he has loves Laila, long before her meeting with Maulana. Maulana and Laila refuse to take sides between the two opposing sides, and try to reconcile them. But a battle is inevitable. In the end, Mahmud kills Anton; but Mahmud dies at the hand of Maulana, his future brother-in-law. Then Maulana runs to Laila’s house and confesses. Laila forgives him, but Majid cannot. He orders a boy to steal the gun of Sabeni, an informant, and he shoots Maulana with it. While the intention was to make this film a musical, it didn’t work as the “realistic world” and the “musical world” could not blend fully.
