Leonid Gubanov

Eleven years ago, General Prozorov, having received an appointment, moved his family from Moscow to a small provincial town. The general has died, his adult children - daughters Olga, Maria and Irina and son Andrey, - not finding any use for themselves, and feeling lonely, dream of returning to their native Moscow. They are trying to somehow arrange their own destiny, each in its own way, but nothing comes out of it ...

Negina, a popular but poor actress, receives lessons from her fiancé Meluzov. Prince Dulebov, intending to take advantage of the girl's dire circumstances, suggests sponsorship, gets refused and becomes spiteful. Despite the latter's intrigues, Negina's benefice performance is triumphant and she receives a large sum of money, part of which Dulebov himself has to provide to keep his face. Still, the entrepreneur refuses to prolong her contract. One after another ecstatic admires come to her expressing their affection, among them Narokov, Naluzov and Velikatov. She leaves honest but dull Meluzov and goes away with rich Velikatov, motivated not by greed but by the desire to work on stage, the only thing she is really in love with.

Junker Olenin, a representative of St. Petersburg's golden youth, is traveling from St. Petersburg to the Caucasus in search of romance. His regiment is stationed in the Cossack village. Here he falls in love with the beautiful Maryana and is ready to marry her, but she loves the Cossack Lukashka and is not going to exchange him for the master.

Screen adaptation of two works by science fiction writers: “Noise Level” by Raymond Jones and “Shadow of the Past” by Ivan Efremov.
