A police captain and the widow of a murdered customs official investigate corruption in a port city on the Black Sea.

The USSR, 1946. The main character, Mikhail Krasnitsky, travels to different cities across the country. When he arrives, he commits cold-blooded murders, for reasons that are not yet evident. The Secret Service manages to connect all of these crimes and figure out that all of the victims were former death camp inmates. However, the murderer’s motive still remains unclear.

The story is about why people's destinies are intertwined, how they influence each other and how this changes the world around us.

As a child, Liza Zaretskaya saw her parents die. She couldn't speak for two years after that and learned to hear people's thoughts. Liza grew up and became a therapist. The reason is a conflict with an influential general of the NKGB of the USSR. But Troshin cannot imagine his life without the police. He manages to get a job as a precinct officer in the most disadvantaged area of Moscow — Maryina Grove.
