After his father's death, teenager Viktor Tsaplin was sent by his stepmother, who suspected the boy of stealing watches, to an Odessa orphanage. The guys met the new guy unfriendly, and when the teacher's antique watch was missing, Victor was considered the culprit. After enrolling in a nautical school and once going to sea with tipsy fishermen, Victor crashes a boat. He is being expelled from the college. Deciding to start a new life and in a new place, Victor leaves to work as a fireman in Kamchatka.

Mukash is chased by officials, learns of the devastation of war from a blind woman and helps her daughter to freedom beyond the river crossing, he, having to choose a tragic solution.

After perestroika in the Soviet Union there is a total collapse of the Soviet system, which leads to chaos in the country. The protagonist of the film, a foreign student, after graduation does not want to return to his country because of the military coup that took place there. But the Soviet government gave clear deadlines for him to leave the country.

When peasant Georgy Makharashvili hears that his soldier son is lying wounded in a hospital, he sets out to visit him. However, unknown to him, his son has been sent back to the front. Reluctant to return home and in a vain attempt to locate his boy, Georgy joins the Red Army in it's unrelenting push to the west.

Old Yermolai lived all his life in one village. He has four sons, each with their own problems. The youngest foolishly ended up in jail and, three months before his release, greatly missing his family, escaped.

Spring, 1944. The Great Patriotic war. The German fascists are still in Sevastopol. A fierce combat is taking place there. At the same time in Yalta, which has already been freed, life goes on peacefully. People believe that the war has left them, that it is far away and no longer dangerous… But the torpedo motor-boat squadron stationed in Yalta is still having a hard time. Every day Soviet marines undertake dangerous sorties towards the German-occupied Sevastopol.

A middle-aged woman Ksenia (N. Yegorova) has a usual regular life: routine work in typography, home without husband, whom she has long divorced, 17-year old daughter with teenage problems, a friend, trying to give her in marriage. In short, nothing special. Though sometimes she sings in a local chorus for the good of her soul. She agrees and changes her life dramatically.

After WWII is over, a young officer Volodya Sharapov returns to Moscow to work in MUR - Moskovskiy Ugolovny Rozysk (Moscow Criminal Police). There he meets Gleb Zheglov who is a chief of a squad which fights organized crime. Their main task is to track down a gang "Chernaya Koshka" (Black Cat) which terrorizes the city. Also, they have to find out who murdered Larisa Gruzdeva. Zheglov believes it was her husband Ivan Gruzdev, but Sharapov has his doubts about it...
