From the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, the opening night of the 2024/2025 symphonic season. Maestro Daniel Harding opens the season with *Tosca*, an opera in concert form in three acts by Giacomo Puccini.

The ensemble then unveils a Spanish-inflected program: Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol leads into Chabrier's España, a "rhapsody for orchestra," before Ravel's perennially beloved Boléro, an undisputed masterpiece of orchestration, ends the concert with flair. Newman's poem tells the story of a soul's journey through death, and provides a meditation on the unseen world of Roman Catholic theology. Gerontius (a name derived from the Greek word geron, "old man") is a devout Everyman. Elgar's setting uses most of the text of the first part of the poem, which takes place on Earth, but omits many of the more meditative sections of the much longer, otherworldly second part, tightening the narrative flow.

Starring Jonas Kaufmann as Bacchus and featuring Emily Magee with Daniel Harding conducting the Vienna Philharmonic, Ariadne auf Naxos was filmed at the acclaimed Salzburg Festival in 2012. This release also includes "Le Bourgeois gentilhomme."
