François Nemeta

A portrait of French filmmaker Michel Gondry, creator, for three decades, of an imperfect, astonishing, fascinating, damaged and poetic work.

Michael Gondry's examination of childhood love is replete with his trademark surreality. One evening at the turn of the century, Stephane discusses with his brother the end of the millenium, but also girls, particularly Aurelie, a classmate with whom he is secretly in love. The following day, Aurelie has a letter to give to him....

Michel Gondry, a genius of DIY cinema, opens up his sleepless nights to François Nemeta's cameras. Dreamlike, bizarre, and endearing, this is a unique documentary that lives up to its director, a chronic insomniac with the same qualities.

The video depicts three teenagers (two boys and one girl) on a carefree summer road trip, driving a 1970s Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The concept aimed for a universal feeling of melancholy and romantic nostalgia, mixing US and French suburban styles. The video was shot on 16mm film.
