George, a charismatic and adventurous young woman, born from an old, catholic family, falls in love, in her teens, with a female teacher named Sybil. Devastated by her lover's eventual suicide, some years later, George embarks on an exciting and reckless journey to the depths of Pigalle's nightlife, circa 1960. After an encounter with a very wealthy, still attractive, but older woman, Odete, who offers her money and gifts in return for sexual favours, George becomes Gigola, a kind of gigolo for women only.

After some misunderstandings and missed encounters, she sees her beloved again, but a tragedy prevents a new meeting: the death of her father, the Portuguese Miguel Maria Coelho. Before dying, the owner of the Flor do Douro bar/restaurant asks his eldest daughter to take care of her mother, Cecília, and her sisters Laiza, Teca, and Madona.

What side is love on? Vera and Rodrigo are absolutely passionate about each other and get married, having João as the product of their love. But, like any other marriage, their relationship has its ups and downs between intense passion and their differing life views. Vera is a up and coming lawyer and Rodrigo an agronomy engineer. She's an urban woman who doesn’t do well in a rural environment while he loves the country and bulls, not too keen on city life. To make things worse, along comes Eduardo, Vera's boss and a brilliant but vicious lawyer. He wants this because, when he was deployed in Angola as a military, Eduardo swore to Rodrigo’s father João Maria, that he’d have his revenge.
