After being discharged from the 372nd infantry, on account of a bean shortage, smithy seeks employment. He finds a job on a construction site, where he helps to build a house, and soon causes havoc amongst the other workers. The construction company owner leaves for a week, and tells his secretary to send a letter to Mr. Smith telling him to complete the construction of the house while he (the owner) is away. The letter is accidently sent to Smithy who manages to complete the house. When the owner returns the house is complete, and Smithy is commended until the last support beam is removed...

Unknown to Edgar, Sally lassos the renegades out of the back seat, while Edgar drives on in his (usual) blissful state of ignorance.

He is leaving when he hears a pistol shot and rushes back, to discover his wife stuffing a dummy in a hamper, but he thinks it is a real body. To protect his wife, Leon steals the hamper, and is almost lynched by a crowd who also thinks the hamper contains a real body.

So the proprietor orders slightly rough around the edges Maud and Mollie, two of his American good time girls working their way around the world, to get him to spend all his money while there. As Donald ends up telling the two good time girls his life story - most specifically about the blonde he let slip through his fingers, she who was the love of his life - a few revelations and the errant coin he left at the roulette wheel betting table change his life.

Edgar is running for county supervisor against his mother-in-law. Edgar, whose campaign is going nowhere, decides to try some dirty-tricks style tactics but, as usual, everything backfires on him.

His sweetheart, Mary O'Connor, and fire-department friends begin to shun him as they think he is just a publicity hound. But a daring rescue of Mary and her younger brother, Mickey, from a blazing inferno shows him to be more than just a publicity-chaser and, now, a real hero to all.

A nosy reporter (Nugent) befriends the dumb Coughlin and pushes the Governor to commute his sentence. Now, Coughlin can ride his family's pride and joy in the Kentucky Derby. BUT, the mean old Warden cancels all paroles--and the idiot decides to escape (even though he's only got 10 more months to serve). So, the reporter has a hunch and goes to see if he can find Coughlin--and the Warden deputizes him!! At this point you might wonder if the boy will make good and win the big race
