Sofya Petrovna, a typist from a publishing house in Leningrad, has her only son repressed. In her publishing house, managers and ordinary employees were repressed. And Sofya Petrovna begins walking around the offices, trying to explain that a mistake has occurred.

In an ordinary industrial Soviet town, notable only for presence of a radio-telescope, people start behaving strangely, in a robotic manner, while assuming geometry-inspired aliases and organizing into a new hierarchy. The phenomenon spreads via a device of alien origin, called “the mediator”, capable of implanting extraterrestrial minds into human bodies. The aliens are bound by limitations of the terrestrial technology, having to use the means at the disposal of humans to prepare the grounds for the full-scale invasion. With “the mediator" being unable to subdue minds of children, lunatics, geniuses, and rebels, a struggle over the fate of the town and the human civilization ensues.

It is dedicated to the memory of Heinrich Zveinek, the first commissar of the Inzen Division, who died during the defense of Lugansk and was buried on Red Square.

A kindly, wise philosopher-type by the name of Orlando joins Marta in her search, and together they survive a gigantic sleeping dragon and imprisonment in a tower with no clear means of escape. They overcome that hurdle, but later on, Orlando succumbs to the evils of The Plague (an all-consuming woman!) and Marta continues on her search alone. Eventually, she does find her brother -- but that only introduces problems she had never considered.

On the advice of doctors, Irina's parents send their daughter to figure skating classes so that she gets stronger and gains strength, but Irina finds her dream and purpose in the sport. Completely absorbed by her incredible determination and complete dedication, Irina ends up in the CSKA figure skating school, where what distinguishes her from other athletes is fully revealed - incredible fortitude and thirst for victory.
