A high-schooler named Valentin Kuzyayev is invited to appear on a TV show about youth. When he is given a questionnaire, Valentin finds himself unable to answer the simplest questions. To sort himself out, he starts to keep a diary.

One day, the elephant—the pride of the zoo—leaves its enclosure and goes for a walk around the city. All attempts by the keepers to bring it back are unsuccessful. Only a five-year-old boy manages to establish contact with the giant animal.

Soviet spy Ladeynikov learns that in one of the pharmaceutical centers in a small resort town works a former German war criminal, Dr. Hass, who is finishing the creation of a deadly chemical gas RH development that he began during World War II, experimenting on POWs.
