Marjut Rimminen

Fourth film in the Blind Justice documentary animation series about women and the law. Based on the real life experiences of Josie O Dwyer, the film uses her voice as commentary, taken from hours of taped conversation with the filmmaker. Different styles of drawing convey her emotions and the devastating effects detention and imprisonment have on young girls put away 'for their own protection'.

Marjut Rimminen's and Päivi Takala's animated film sheds light on childhood in post-war Finland. In it, an animated and documentary film combined with a rich sound expression create a multifaceted story.

In a house on a cliff by the sea, a man and a woman live together and eventually have children. When the mother disappears and the father goes for a swim in the sea, the baby is left to be raised by the twin brothers and the cruel, older sister. When they grow up secrets can only be kept for so long.

Two adults balance their sexual behavior on a tightrope with the threat of AIDS/HIV. They receive support from the Red Ribbon, the symbol of the global AIDS/HIV aid organization. They learn to adjust their movements and eventually feel safe.

Mixed live-action and paper maché puppet animation. The disjointed debris of our childhood state still lurking within our adult consciousness act as a painful, disruptive force. A ghost-like little girl keeps tapping on a woman’s consciousness, demanding attention, recalling a traumatic childhood event and thus distorting the woman’s experience of the present.

A series of humorous skits illustrating the experience of women in a male-dominated world.

A woman who can't stand the passing of time turns herself into a black hole. A thousand unchanging years pass inside her warm and dark embrace until, finally, the Singularity awakens inside.

"An Anatomy of Melancholy" is a cinematic meditation on mortality which takes the form of a special anatomy book - one in the process of being made. As hand-drawn illustrations appear slowly and painfully on the pages of the book, showing us parts of a dissected human body, we witness both the act of creation and a testament to our own passing. Accompanying the simple but powerful images of the human body, we hear the words of Keats' Ode on Melancholy: "Ay, in the very temple of Delight. Veiled Melancholy has her sovran shrine..."

Political documentary meets baroque rave video in this computer animated portrayal of Louis XIV and his pleasure palace at Versailles. Courtiers from a Rudolf Valentino movie appear in an environment more reminiscent of Blade Runner, while shots from the Poll Tax Riots are weaved into a virtual diorama of London. Uncover the Seventeenth Century origins of our fascination with special effects, surveillance and addiction to media spectacle.

Urpo and Turpo are two toy bears who live on a bookshelf in a child's bedroom. Each episode rebuilds the room into somewhere else out of whatever is already on the carpet: folded laundry becomes a princess's pile of mattresses, toy blocks a castle keep, a plastic saw and a tea-towel apron a hospital. Turpo, the red bear, leaps before he thinks; Urpo, in grey, is pensive, with a lively imagination.
