Jimmie Jump is returning from Europe to the USA. His parents and an old girl-friend, Sally - whom he hasn't seen for years, are expecting him at the dock. But, due to some unfortunate coincidences they are mistaken about the identity of each other, but meet unbeknownst to that fact. Jimmie decides that he has to find that girl. Finally, after having annoyed a policeman, and a great fraction of the female population, he finds her working as a temperance worker. To get her attention, he dresses up in rags to meet her. But his way of introduction causes more confusion.

Dolores Valdez, returning to her South American home, falls in love with Dan Stone, the ship's doctor. He is forced to jump overboard when he thinks he has killed a man who while protecting Dolores. Diego, the uncle of Dolores, is trying to force her to marry Ortego, has a counterfeiting business going with Ortego in a lonely chapel in which Dolores is forbidden to go.

When an itinerant performing troupe that specializes in “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” return to the owner and her son’s hometown for a show the younger brother Roy is nervous and unhappy because he plays Little Eva in the play. Sure that his sweetheart and her family will jeer along with the rest of the town he stumbles during the performance wrecking the set and bringing the show to a grinding halt. All is well though when the town’s hotel proprietor throws a big dinner for the troupe.

Wealthy playboy Sandy Benton falls for pretty but decidedly less wealthy neighbor Doris Lawrence. She rebuffs his attentions, but scheming golddigger Estelle has her own plans for Sandy. When Doris hears about Sandy's wild times with Estelle, she sets out to show him that she, too, can be a "modern" woman.

Rosalind Joy (Helen Foster) is an heiress who has inherited a South Seas island known as Pleasure Island. A hidden cache of gold is allegedly buried on the island, which has several haunted structures. Rosalind's uncle, Spring Gilbert (Al Ferguson), wants the gold for himself and declares he will stop at nothing, not even the death of his niece, to get it. Rosalind, meanwhile, is befriended by Jerry Fitzjames (Jack Dougherty), a playwright. Unfortunately, Jerry has only recently escaped from a psychiatric hospital. Although he swears to protect Rosalind, she doubts Jerry's sanity. The two lovers race against Uncle Gilbert (who has set several traps for them) to find the treasure. In the end, Rosalind and Jerry are aided by the "Phantom Rider," a spectral horseman.

A young barber's girlfriend falls into the clutches of a shady nightclub owner and his cohorts, who plan to get her involved in their nefarious schemes. When his efforts to rescue her prove futile, he enlists the help of his father, who was at one time a professional baseball player, and his former teammates to save her.

A band of Indians led by the half-breed 'The Hawk' terrorizes prospectors in a valley. When the old prospector Clyde Selby hits the mother lode, The Hawk plans to kidnap his pretty blond daughter Mary Selby. This kidnapping actually proves one of the lesser of the perils faced by the poor Mary. Laramie, a government agent, wants with the help of his friendly Shoshone Indian friends to extricate the damsel-in-distress.

John Mason returns to the Sally Ann mine to claim his half share. Janet Cater also returns although her father lost his half share to Joe Ryan. Ryan and his gang are also there to get the gold. A mysterious Phantom is also present. Mason's plan to expose Ryan as an outlaw and to force him to turn his share to Janet works. But when distracted by the Phantom, John is made a prisoner by the gang.

Sheriff Jack Norton is badly wounded in a gun battle with bandits and is helped by Anita Parsons, the daughter, as he later learns, of the bandit leader. Torn between his love for the girl and his devotion to duty, Jack decides the latter is too strong to resist.

Despite his faithfulness, Melvin is always under suspicion by wife Mame. Complications erupt when a woman from a party across the hall passes out in Melvin's bedroom just before Mame returns.

When Click's father is killed by a phantom bullet, he returns home to find the killer. To put the killer off guard he poses as a dude with a camera. Unknown to Click, the camera will reveal the killer's identity.

Charley is called upon to go out with his boss on a date with the boss' mistress, to act as a beard.

Poor, decent young woman Lory (Percy) avoids moral pratfalls after she is employed by a rich family. She falls in love with the son (Harlan) but the couple is separated by his cruel, class-conscious mother. Lory stays true to her spirit and does not compromise her integrity when the mother attempts to pay her off. Later, a tragedy might open the door the broken hearted young woman to find happiness.

This is not a Clara Bow vehicle, and yet it is clearly the aspect/asset of Clara Bow which elevates a fairly serious melodrama to a timeless and profound social statement. Opening the film on death row where the handsome youth awaits the chair, a stirring test of the legal system evolves after two elite types conspire to expose its inadequacies. Elite, jaded society lawyer Gordon Harrington fabricates a murder, implicating an entirely "hired" fall-guy, one Dan O'Connor, while the bored playboy-type hides away on a yacht until the points are proven and the legal system has been disgraced. Naturally, something goes wrong, the playboy really turns up murdered, and O'Connor is now the accused, imprisoned murderer scheduled to be hanged.

Dan and Myra Barclay, on vacation in Monte Carlo, are forced to cut short their European visit when Dan is ordered by his company to take charge of a gold mine in South America. Having once experienced the sweet life, Myra can no longer tolerate the rough monotony of life in the mining country, and she runs off with Señor Ortego, the owner of the mine. Myra soon realizes that Ortego's intentions are dishonorable and she decides to return to Dan, but on the way home she is in an accident and loses her memory.
