A seagull is caught by the black tide of a sinking petrol ship. She manages to fly inland and falls down in a garden by a cat. Moribund, she asks the cat to fulfill three promises: that when she lays her egg he must not eat it; that he must take care of it until it hatches; that he would teach the newborn how to fly.

In a small village called Pietrelcina, in the middle of the mountains of southern Italy, lives young Francisco. After serving as a friar for many years, Francisco becomes a priest and begins his first mission.

The protagonists—two boys who fight to free their neighborhood from the presence of an evil wizard who steals people's souls and turns them into "pupi"—are named Giovanni and Paolo, in homage to Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, who were indeed young friends in Palermo during those years.
