Detten Schleiermacher did not start making films until late in life. He was actually a typographer. With “Trab Trab” he made an impish attempt to create a synthesis between Dadaism and New Objectivity. The film is a precise and elegant account of a racecourse. It does so without narration or images of either horses or patrons; everything we see has been captured either pre- or post-race.

The film shows the colorful life and hustle and bustle at the Viktualienmarkt in the heart of Munich. The day begins with the ringing of the city's many bell towers. The market is still quiet, but quickly becomes busy. The deliveries arrive and the traders begin to put away their goods. The rich offer ranges from baked goods, fruit, vegetables, fish and meat to flowers, handicrafts and delicatessen - the colorful market bustle begins. Individual small events and, above all, the people are observed. At 6 o'clock in the evening, it's time for the big clean-up before it starts all over again the next day.
