José Lins do Rego

American couple move to the State of Ceará, Brazil, in the 1930s. The husband is looking for oil. His beautiful wife, Donna, soon falls in love with a rude but charming fisherman. The forbidden romance may destroy her marriage and upset the morals of the small village where they live.

In 1910, in the State of Paraíba, Brazil, a man is expelled from his own land by the ruthless colonel who owns the sugar mill. He asks some outlaws to help him retrieve his land.

After being orphaned, a boy is raised by his grandfather and uncles, rich rural landowners, on a sugarcane plantation where he grows up, studies, learns about politics, love and disillusionment.

In a fishing village, Vó Manuela, endowed with mystical powers, closes the body of her grandson, Nô, for love. But Eduarda's arrival completely changes the boy's destiny.
