In the winter of 1943 two young Jews, Alek and Fryda, escape, via sewer tunnels, from the atrocities underway in Warsaw ghetto. Alek, entrusted with undeveloped photos of the horrors within, makes his way to a supposedly safe apartment only to find it occupied by Germans. Another tenant, a pole Stephania, abruptly offers to shelter him in her spacious apartment. She comforts him and they make love that very night. Stefania is uncommonly generous and willing to jeopardize her own safety by hiding a Jew. She even goes to a nearby church and rescues Fryda. But Fryda is ungrateful and proceeds to sabotage the trio's safety in insidious ways.

It's a film about solidarity and human help: in this case, from a less persecuted Pole to a more persecuted Jew. The film's protagonists are a young woman, Jadwiga, who makes a living feeding lice at the Institute, and a ghetto escapee, Dalek, and later his supposed sister, or rather his wife, Fryda, whom Jadwiga shelters in her apartment. The three characters fight for their lives, for survival, and not only for their own but also Fryda's unborn child. However, they fail, as a series of tragic events unfolds. Knowing that her husband, Dalek, will not reveal the truth about them to Jadwiga, who is in love with him, Fryda does so alone and, without saying goodbye, departs for the embattled ghetto. Her husband follows her.

March 1945. After crossing the Oder River, one of the Polish Army units heading for Berlin encounters resistance from German defensive formations. After a fierce exchange of fire, a doctor operates on seriously wounded soldiers. Private Józef Łopuch helps him in the field hospital and also serves as a barber. Łopuch, who despite sending over twenty letters has received no reply from his wife Sabina, composes another letter assuring his wife that although war is a nasty business, nothing can happen to him, as he was born in a forge...

The reminiscences of a Russian pilot, shot down over Poland during the war, of his first great love there.

The film depicts three days in the life of a state farm director, during which he celebrates his 40th birthday. He was adopted by four godfathers who have helped him throughout his life and have reached positions of prominence themselves. He makes a mistake at work turning away some foreigh investors and is required to cover the losses, but even his godfathers are unable to help him. He regains affection of his son instead.
