Following the end of the Russian Civil War, three close friends and former Red Army commanders—Langovoy, Zhyoltikov, and their elder comrade Uncle Sasha—return to their hometown to serve in the military headquarters. While Sasha and Zhyoltikov remain bachelors and share a room, Langovoy lives with his wife, Mashenka, whom he married during the war.

The film recreates episodes from the December Uprising of 1825. Against the backdrop of the uprising, a love story unfolds between the Decembrist Annenkov and Polina Gebl.

Tsar Nicholas I is enamoured by Natalia, the wife of Alexander Pushkin. To cover his tracks, the tsar encourages the suit of Georges d'Anthès, a French officer, with the help of Count Alexander von Benckendorff. Pushkin hears rumours of D’Anthès’s love for his wife and challenges him to a duel.

Inspired by communist slogans, a simple shepherd named Ivan takes part in the Russian Civil War and becomes a decorated officer of the Red Army.
