Set during the time of the Chola invasion, the film tells the story of a courageous Pandiyan king. The king filled the hearts of his people with courage, patriotism and faith to help fight the Cholas.

Viswanath (Rajnikanth), a famous lawyer, stays with his widowed mother (Vijayakumari) and physically handicapped sister (Uma). He sends Jegan, a rich magnate's son (Sathyaraj) and Lokaiya, two criminals to jail on the charge of rape and murder of an innocent girl. Jagan’s father, GMK (M N Nambiar) uses his influence and starts creating trouble in Viswanath’s life. GMK succeeds in getting Viswanath imprisoned on a trumped up charge. His heartbroken mother dies. Once out of jail, Viswanath sets out to punish the culprits when he temporarily loses his eyesight.

Gnana Sambanthan, a young child, has a divine intervention while visiting Lord Shiva's temple with his parents. Later, he starts composing hymns.

In the village Ammapatti, Maruthu Pandi is a coracle operator in day and the village protector at night. The villagers give him food in exchange of his work. Maruthu Pandi has a mentally ill sister Lakshmi who is pregnant and he takes care of Lakshmi like a mother. Kanagavalli, a dancer, slowly falls in love with Maruthu Pandi. Kanagavalli is in fact a police officer who wants to arrest Maruthu Pandi. Maruthu Pandi's real name is Manickam, and after a revealed flashback, police team come to Ammapatti to arrest Manickam. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Mohan, a kind-hearted man, not only preaches and believes in equality but also practices it. He marries a poor girl but lands in trouble as she is accused of murdering a scientist.

Because it was humbled that by his betrothed, Murugan a nice provincial, puts itself to find in the capital, an even more beautiful and more intelligent wife who will be the liked for what he is : A simple man of the campaign. He will not be at the end of his surprises but will finally find the one person in a million of the name of Mainaga.
