A woman was killed by a truck wheel, which flew off while the vehicle was in motion. As the freight company which owns the truck becomes the target of the public and the media’s wrath, Tokuro Akamatsu, the president of the freight company, realizes that a structural defect within the truck itself may have been to blame. A conspiracy of the wheel manufacturer's attempts to cover up a defective product is uncovered.

When the suspect of an arson case refuses to cooperate with the investigation, the detectives search his house and find a locked-up little girl. She doesn't talk and there are no clues to her identity, so assistant psychology professor Narumi Saku is asked to counsel her.

University student Wakamizu Ryota (Emoto Tokio), who is the middle of job hunting, gets caught up in a sudden gang dispute. Ryota’s life is saved by Yanagiba Ryuichi (Namase Katsuhisa), the boss of Yanagiba-gumi, and Ryota for some reason ends up harbouring Yanagiba in his own home. Ignoring Ryota who wants him to leave immediately, Yanagiba uses the leftover food in the fridge and starts to prepare a meal without asking. However, the meal is surprisingly delicious despite the leftovers that did not seem possible to combine. This is the beginning of a bizarre communal life connected by meals for a gangster and a university student.

Ritsu Hayakawa, a college student lives in happiness together with his sweet family; younger brother, younger sister, and mother, Kyoko. Their smile and Mom’s rice omelet always make him happy. However, Kyoko has to be hospitalized for cancer. He goes back home in gloomy feeling and sees that his siblings, who don’t know about their mother’s disease, are excited about a pizza-to-go for dinner. Ritsu can’t stand to see them, so he runs away to kitchen, then he find a notebook that his mother wrote down her recipe. He notices how deeply Kyoko loves her family, and how important meals are, then he decides to prepare meal for them to maintain his family’s life. One day, Ritsu comes to know that he doesn’t related by blood with Kyoko. He is an adopted child. Ritsu goes to see his biological mother, Maya, then he sees Maya treating his biological brother, Ruka, cruelly. Then he becomes to want to help Ruka from his mother.

When this happens though, she blacks out. Even in her day-to-day life, she can hear people's evil intentions and true colors and senses their lies and deception. That is why she always wears headphones in order to shut out people's emotions. She works well with her colleagues at the "Red Spider Lily" (Higanbana) unit, who are all brutally honest acid-tongued women with no qualms about speaking their minds. "Red Spider Lily" is an eclectic unit that includes a science geek, a single mom, and a woman who grew up abroad. Seen by many as a department that's been taken off the main career track, "Red Spider Lily" turns out to be full of fabulous detectives!

Yuri Rintaro used to work as the chief of the First Investigation Division in Tokyo. Due to a case, he resigned from the police force and moved back to his hometown of Kyoto. Now, he works as a forensic psychologist in Kyoto. After receiving requests from the police, he helps them with their investigations. His investigation method involves careful observance of the crime scenes and he uses trace techniques learned from a hunter. He met that hunter in the Rocky Mountains, USA, during his school days. His assistant in Kyoto is Mitsugi Shunsuke. Mitsugi admires Yuri and runs the website "Yuri Rintaro no Jikenbo," which records Yuri's performance.
