Günther and Erwin are best friends and love enemies at the same time: the two shrewd older men have been at loggerheads for 30 years now - over a woman that one of them once stole from the other, of course. Carola and Dieter Martin have been married for 25 years. The talented young entrepreneur Finn Sieveking has to cope with the death of his mother Maria, who was always at his side in the management of the traditional Hamburg family business. Out of nowhere the adventurer Jonathan Clark appears, who introduces himself as his biological father. Finn has to cooperate with him unwillingly, because Maria has bequeathed both of them half of their business shares. Only gradually does Finn begin to understand what his clever mother intended.

It was first broadcast on 31 January 2001, on German television channel ZDF. The first episode was broadcast 27 June 1971 in the German Democratic Republic, and after the dissolution of Fernsehen der DDR the series was picked up by ARD. It was originally created as a counterpart to the West German series Tatort, and quickly became a public favorite.
