Cast out by his father because of his wild shenanigans, Steve King travels west, where he drowns his sorrows in drink. One night while drunk, he marries Lonely Lou, a servant who works in the saloon. Awakening to find his life seemingly destroyed, Steve takes his burro and miserable wife into the mountains to prospect for gold.

Mrs. John Cleveland, victim of an overly-jealous husband, adopts a child but, fearing to bring it into her own household, furnishes another home for it, and places the little girl in charge of a nurse. But Horton shows him a letter which proves that the child adopted by Mrs. Cleveland really belongs to her husband. Though the jealous husband had been unwilling to forgive, the loving wife grants forgiveness.

Spirited Beatrice Corlin challenges William Steele to successfully construct a cabin on the disputed land, promising to cook him a home-cooked dinner if he succeeds. Beatrice then enlists the aid of an acquaintance named Joe Embry to help her win the bet. After several clashes between the men, Embry’s true colors are revealed when he abducts Beatrice. Learning of the treachery, William comes to her rescue. The ordeal brings William and Beatrice to the realization that they have fallen in love with each other. Rather than settling their wager, they cancel the bet by merging their land and getting married.

In spite of her teasing and taunts (or perhaps because of them), Walters finds himself falling in love with Penny.
