Impoverished priest Harihar Ray, dreaming of a better life for himself and his family, leaves his rural Bengal village in search of work. Alone, his wife, Sarbojaya, looks after her rebellious daughter, Durga, and her young son, Apu, as well as Harihar's elderly aunt Indir. The children enjoy the small pleasures of their difficult life, while their parents suffer the daily indignities heaped upon them.

Apu and his family have moved away from the country to live in the bustling holy city of Benares. As he progresses from wide-eyed child to intellectually curious teenager, eventually studying in Kolkata, we witness his academic and moral education, as well as the growing complexity of his relationship with his mother.

When as a young man he became a temple priest, he was seized by an unquenchable thirst for union with God, and he immersed himself in intense meditation and other spiritual practices.

Detective Sen sent his assistant Bimal to Ratnagarh to investigate and ascertain the security of young Kumar Bahadur, a new predecessor of the royal family of the estate. They observed that a mysterious lady Manjusri (Manju De) sang an uncanny song in the adjacent water body near the palace. Mr. Gupta (Bikash Roy), a suspicious botanist who stayed in the neighborhood also roamed in that locality. It revealed that he was deprived of the real property of the royal family and took revenge by killing the members of the family. He used one deaf and dumb porter as a hired killer. Ultimately, he was killed by the detective at the end before he could commit another murder.

She ends up falling for him and that ruins his career, even though he did not feel the same for her. He later gets married to Kalyani but he and Sandhya still share a bond for the sake of her property.

Throughout her life, Supriya loved a man and was married to another man however she did not either escape from her responsibilities as a doting wife. However, her inner feelings keep tormenting her all her life and her married life becomes an utter failure. She not only ruins her life but everybody else's around her. In the end, her life becomes nothing more than fragmented pieces of broken images.

In the meantime, Bani also understood the affection and love she had for her husband. She came to know about life and commitment. One day Bani heard that Ambernath was very ill and he stayed in a lonely place. Bani rushed there and put her every effort to make him healthy. Later they came to know each other and lived happily.
