This loosely plotted coming-of-age tale follows the life of 15-year-old Laurent Chevalier as he stumbles his way over the burgeoning swell of adolescence in 1950s France. After having his first sexual experience with a prostitute and dodging the lips of a priest, Chevalier contracts a case of scarlet fever. When the fever leaves him with a heart murmur, Chevalier is placed in a sanatorium, along with his over-attentive and adulterous mother.

Parisian everyman Antoine Doinel has married his sweetheart Christine Darbon, and the newlyweds have set up a cozy domestic life of selling flowers and giving violin lessons while Antoine fitfully works on his long-gestating novel. As Christine becomes pregnant with the couple's first child, Antoine finds himself enraptured with a young Japanese beauty. The complications change the course of their relationship forever.

France, 1893. Joseph Bouvier attempts to shoot his love who refused to marry him and to commit suicide. Léon unwillingly joins the Résistance when a British pilot is shot down and hides in his attic and, through a series of mishaps, he accidentally steals the plans for Hitler's V1 missiles.

Charlie Pattison, a wealthy American, lands at Athens airport, where he has just received an emergency phone call from his friend Maurice. The two men met in prison camps and have vowed to track down a certain Nazi doctor, Hermann Geiss, a connoisseur of masterpieces who is guilty of criminal experiments on prisoners. But Maurice doesn't show up. As soon as he arrives, Charlie investigates his friend's disappearance. He ends up meeting a painting dealer, Cardin, whose client Geiss is said to have been.

The young artist Wanda Leibovitz comes to Paris, hoping to forget unfortunate love. Soon after arrival directly at the station Wanda meets the mysterious old woman suggesting to rent at it the room (whom the old woman, allegedly, held ready for the now deceased sister). Wanda doesn't know yet that this room will change all her life shortly after it slightly opens a mysterious forbidden door.
