Dementia, a diagnosis that changes everything for those who are affected and for their relatives. Accepting the disease can seem just as difficult as finding an appropriate approach. But perhaps it is much more about compassion than about understanding? In an observational way, The Inner Light explores the everyday lives of people with dementia and focuses mainly on positive situations and encounters. The film tries to offer a poetic interpretation of this special state of being and aims at reducing fears in dealing with people with dementia and at accepting each person's humanity.

AYSHA (10) a small, rebellious girl wearing a full-body veil, and her SISTER(9) are put to a religious test in a backyard in Afrin (Syria) by a covered WOMAN. However, the stronghead Aysha is struggling with identity and secrets, and takes a stand.

An African refugee, whose identity is unknown, is being interrogated in prison. He refuses to speak and eat, seems traumatized. When the prison guard, who is looking after the prisoner, finds a hidden photograph, he realizes there is something out of the ordinary about this refugee. Inside the dreary prison cell there is a friendly relationship developing between the two of them. The prison guard is the only one who learns about the refugees past and motives. What connects the two of them is the shared fate of having lost a loved one. The guard decides to help the refugee, even if it means risking his own job. But time is getting short and the deportation machinery is already in full play.

Evelyn Möller's life could be so wonderful. If only her boss didn't make her life hell. But committing a crime isn't the answer – at least not a good one...
