Bethânia returns to her land, where the family’s old sugar mill was built, the Wanderley Mill. Between photographs, fantastic creatures, bills to pay and workers claiming their rights to the land, Bethânia faces herself in a present where both the past and the future look menacing.

Shirley has left the big city to live in a small seaside town and look after her elderly grandmother. She drives a tractor on a local coconut plantation, loves rock music and wants to be a tattoo artist. She feels trapped in the tiny coastal village. She is involved with Jeison, who also works on the coconut farm and who free dives for lobster and octopus in his spare time.

The daily lives of three young students in São Paulo. They symbolize the first generation of black students that, thanks to new education policies, attend the best public universities - places traditionally reserved for the white elite.

Small-town trickster Pedro Malasartes has to face two great enemies: Próspero, who will do anything to impede such a lazy, cowardly person like Malasartes from dating his sister, Áurea; and Death incarnated, who wants to take a vacation after two thousand years collecting lives and intends on tricking Malasartes into assuming his tedious job.
