Lithuanian schoolchildren were driving home, returning from an excursion. Not far from Minsk, the bus came under bombing. The war caught the boys far from home, by surprise. A turn in their destinies, knowledge of the harshest sides of existence... And the heroes are only thirteen years old.

The movie takes place during Russia's civil war between the Reds (Bolsheviks) and the Whites (Mensheviks). Andrejka and Yarinka are a young betrothed couple in the village of Malinovka, caught between the battle lines. Gritsian is the leader of a Menshevik band who are planning to attack the village. Yarinka appeals to the local Bolshevik commander for his faction's help. The Bolsheviks quickly come up with a plan to save the village... but the plan requires Yarinka to enter into a pretend marriage with Gritsian.

After the death of his father, a sea captain, Ilka got even closer to his mother and older sister. Increasingly, he consults with them and reads his poems, laughing while closing his eyes. Zoya, who was in love with Yura Borikovsky, a student of the nautical school, gave him, with the consent of her brother, a cherished notebook with poems to look at. But the very next day, Ilka is forced to take her back, from Yura, who turned out to be a scoundrel.

The movie is based on the real story of Nika Turbina, once world-famous Soviet child poetess, who got completely forgotten in the 1990s. That's when we meet her: at the age of 27 Nika is full of hopes and doubts regarding her gift. Due to the age restriction, she's got just one shot to enter the Drama School, and that's her only chance to separate from her cherishing and oppressive mother. Acquaintance with a new friend Ivan gives Nika hope for a happy future, but there is still something in her memory that triggers her. Tragically cheerful, painfully confused and desperately believing in love and life after childhood, Nika puts everything on the line to overcome ghosts of the past.
