Known architect Jean Blomis married with two kids, living in a modern condo, though being very outgoing, his wife isn't. After learning about scientist Holm's new hormone, he hopes to feed his wife with it to get her pepped up.

Young student Steffen Berg finds it difficult to adapt to society's laws and rules. After dropping out of medical school, he starts working in a shop to support his family, together with his brother Jørgen and sister Gerda, and to keep his mother out of a nursing home. One of Steffen's friends is going to America with his wife and needs money. Steffen takes 500 kroner from the store's cash register. The next day, there is an audit and Steffen's theft is discovered.

The architect Gösta complains to Dr. Holm about his wife Gunilla's introverted character. Holm proposes a drug that will make her more outgoing.

The film deals with mental illness and aims to prove that psychological trauma can and should be treated just like any other illness.
