Legendary directors Wim Umboh and Sjumandjaja, decided to experiment by producing a script being written at the same time of the shooting. Mama is a complex story with two seemingly unrelated narrative threads. The first story revolves around Sanca and Anani. The second is about Ulli and Pandji, and in between the two stories is a third narrative, about Ulla, a religious prostitute and Ulli’s sister, and Suwaka.

Rhoma and Ricky not only have a different taste in music but also differ in the way they live. So a final fight ensues, and this time it is Rhoma’s turn to crush Ricky’s hand.

In the end, Mahmud kills Anton; but Mahmud dies at the hand of Maulana, his future brother-in-law. Then Maulana runs to Laila’s house and confesses. Laila forgives him, but Majid cannot. He orders a boy to steal the gun of Sabeni, an informant, and he shoots Maulana with it. While the intention was to make this film a musical, it didn’t work as the “realistic world” and the “musical world” could not blend fully.

Sumiyati was "raped" by her sister-in-law, and started to have feelings for men, especially when she also played with Parmin, instead of introducing Sinta to Novita. Sum also then falls in love with young man Arman. Sinta-Novita's relationship didn't last long, because her husband, who was abroad, returned home. Sinta speeds off using Novita's gift car and dies.
