During his short life, Milan Rastislav Štefánik accomplished many extraordinary feats in the pursuit of his nation's liberation and the founding of Czechoslovakia. A man of many facets and professions, he left his mark on the history of several nations. This two-part documentary examines his personality from three distinct historical perspectives: French, Czech, and Slovak. Through these viewpoints—complemented by previously unpublished photographs—we piece together a comprehensive portrait of one of Slovakia’s most significant figures.

The film takes place during one January night in Modra in 1856. The main character is the mysterious Samuel Hronský (Robert Roth), a character created by the filmmakers. Hronský comes to Modra to attend Štúr's funeral. He cannot understand why his friend died so unexpectedly. He decides to find out if someone took him from this world. A train dispatcher encounters a mute stranger who appears out of nowhere, and finds himself mysteriously involved with a murder in Poland. The end of the eighties in the twentieth century. Alois Nebel works as a dis­patcher at the small railway station in Bílý Potok, a remote village on the Czech–Polish border. He's a loner, who prefers old timetables to people, and he finds the loneliness of the station tranquil – except when the fog rolls in. Then he hallucinates, sees trains from the last hundred years pass through the station. They bring ghosts and shadows from the dark past of Central Eu­rope. Alois can’t get rid of these nightmares and eventually ends up in sanatorium. In the sanatorium, he gets to know The Mute, a man carrying an old photograph who was arrested by the police after crossing the border. No one knows why he came to Bílý Potok or who he’s looking for, but it is his past that propels Alois on his journey…

Milan Rastislav Štefánik was the first Slovak to circumnavigate the world, to climb Mont Blanc, to survive the shooting down of his ice-plane during World War I. He was an intellectual, scientist, inventor, astronomer, national hero, but also a lover of women and a bon vivant. 100 years ago, everyone considered his dreams a utopia, but he was not afraid to step into the unknown and realise his dream of liberating his own nation. His life story seems almost unbelievable, considering that he did it all as a single man in failing health, from the poorest of circumstances.
